However, before you pack your bags and head to this remote destination, it’s important to consider some crucial factors. In this post, we’ll delve into why Balabac Island might not be the best choice for your next travel adventure. From challenging accessibility to limited amenities, read on to discover why Balabac Island might not be the best travel destination for you.

Disclaimer: This post aims to highlight some lesser-known aspects of visiting Balabac Island. While Balabac is a beautiful and unique destination, it’s important to be aware of potential challenges and considerations that may not be commonly mentioned. My intention is to provide a balanced view to help you make an informed decision about your travel plans. Keep in mind also that we visited Balabac in the last week of February this year. This post is based only on our experience.

Why Balabac Might Not Be the Best Travel Destination For You

Difficult Accessibility

Traveling to Balabac Island requires multiple transfers and long travel times, which can be inconvenient for many travelers. From Puerto Princesa, it takes approximately 6 to 7 hours by van to reach Buliluyan Port in Bataraza. For instance, our journey began with a hotel pickup in Puerto Princesa at 2:00 AM. If you find it difficult to sleep in a van, this part of the trip may be particularly challenging for you.

Big Waves and Rough Seas

The waters around Balabac Island can be rough, with big waves posing a challenge for boat travel. This can lead to uncomfortable and sometimes dangerous boat rides, especially for those who are not accustomed to rough seas.

Long Travel Times Between Islands

Navigating between the various island destinations in Balabac can be time-consuming and exhausting. The boat rides are often lengthy. Getting from one island to the next takes around an hour.

Unpredictable Weather

The weather in Balabac Island can be highly unpredictable, with sudden storms and challenging conditions, particularly during the rainy season. Bad weather can lead to tour cancellations, disrupting your travel plans. For example, during our visit, our tour operator informed us that all tours had been canceled the previous week due to adverse weather conditions. It’s important to note that tour cancellations are determined by the Coast Guard, not the tour operators, ensuring the safety of all travelers.

Limited Amenities

Balabac Island lacks many modern conveniences, including luxury accommodations and diverse dining options. Power and water interruptions can occur, as we experienced during our visit.

During our stay on Onok Island, our accommodation was very basic. The island has no fresh water supply, so we had to use seawater to flush the toilet. Additionally, we were informed that, due to the approaching summer season, the freshwater supply was running low, which meant we might not be able to take a proper bath, only rinse off salt water from our bodies. Fortunately, upon our arrival, we learned that a deep well had recently been dug on the island, providing fresh water. However, showers were taken outside, right beside the well, rather than in a bathroom.

Sandflies

Punta Sebaring, one of the islands in Balabac, is notorious for its sandflies (aka nik-nik), which cause itchy and painful bites. These persistent pests can significantly detract from enjoying the beautiful beaches and make outdoor activities uncomfortable. Visitors often find themselves constantly swatting away these tiny insects, turning a relaxing beach day into an unpleasant experience. To prepare, we applied insect repellent before arriving on the island. Fortunately, when we got there, we didn’t encounter any sandflies—they were probably taking a nap.

Diet Disruptions Due to Delicious Food

The tours in Balabac often feature an array of delicious local foods that can be hard to resist. From fresh seafood to traditional Filipino dishes, the culinary delights can tempt you to overindulge, potentially disrupting your diet. While the food is a highlight for many, it can be challenging to maintain healthy eating habits during your stay.

High Cost of Private Tours

DIY trips to Balabac can be prohibitively expensive, especially if you opt for private tours. Due to the remote location and the logistics involved, organizing a trip on your own can quickly add up in costs, making group tours a more budget-friendly option despite their limitations.

High Expectations for Future Beach Destinations

The stunning beauty of Balabac’s beaches can spoil you for future travels. Once you experience the pristine sands and crystal-clear waters of Balabac, you might find it difficult to appreciate other beach destinations that don’t measure up. This can make future vacations feel less satisfying and enjoyable.

While Balabac Island offers breathtaking natural beauty and unique experiences, it’s essential to be aware of the potential challenges that come with visiting this remote destination. From difficult accessibility and limited amenities to sandflies and unpredictable weather, these factors can significantly impact your travel experience. Additionally, DIY trips can be costly, making organized group tours more economical.

The purpose of this post is not really to stop you from visiting Balabac Island but to share what to expect. You’re probably like me who is not picky with where you’re going to sleep or doesn’t mind long travel times, but I know people who are just not a fan of these things and love to complain so much ruining the experience of the people they are with.

By being prepared and understanding what to expect, you can make a more informed decision about whether Balabac is the right destination for you. Remember, every travel destination has its pros and cons, and what matters most is finding the adventure that best suits your preferences and comfort level.
